The Coins of Holy Death: A Tool of Divination and Magick for Santa Muerte Devotees
Digital Web Book by Arnold Bustillo

Covered Coins

Face-Up / Face-Down:

When one coin covers another coin, we still only interpret coins that land face-up, and the face-down coins can be removed from the reading surface. See Figure 5 and Figure 6.

The two coins on the left show The Eye coin on top of a face down coin. The two coins on the right show a face down coin on top of The Skull coin.
Figure 5 - On the left, The Eye landed on a face-down coin. On the right, a face-down coin landed on The Skull.
Since all face-down coins are disregarded, these coins would be interpreted as shown in Figure 6.

Figure 6 - This is the same reading from Figure 5, except all face-down coins have been removed.
Always disregard the face-down coins.
Face-Up / Face-Up:

In the event that a face-up coin covers another face-up coin, then the two coins should be interpreted together, and the coin on top should be considered to be a major influence over, to literally weigh down on, the coin on the bottom. See Figure 7.

The two coins on the left show The Eye coin on top of The Rose coin. The two coins on the right show The Scythe coin on top of The Skull coin.
Figure 7 - When one face-up coin lands on top of another face-up coin,
then the two coins should be interpreted together, with the top coin considered
to have a direct influence over, or to weigh down on, the bottom coin.
In Figure 7 we see that, on the left, The Eye coin covers The Rose coin, and on the right, The Scythe coin covers The Skull coin. In a full reading, The Eye (representing intuition) covering The Rose (representing love and relationships) may represent that intuition is the biggest factor affecting a relationship - in other words, that you should trust your intuition regarding how to navigate a romantic or close personal relationship.

Also in Figure 7, of the two coins on the right, The Scythe (representing death and new beginnings) covering The Skull (emphasizing the self) may represent that a death, or new beginning, is currently having the greatest influence over your life right now.

For the sake of practice, if the four coins in Figure 7 appeared in a real reading, we could interpret all four coins as a sign that following through on your intuition regarding a close personal relationship will lead directly to a new beginning in your life.

Face-Down / Face-Down:

If one face-down coin covers another face-down coin, then both coins are disregarded. Face-down coins are always disregarded, no matter where or how they land in a coin reading.
