The Magick
If you are able to erect an altar to Santa Muerte, then do so before initiating any sort of magick petition ritual to Santa Muerte, including before initiating the prayer magick described in this book. If it’s absolutely impossible to erect any sort of physical altar, or even to conjure an image of an altar in your mind’s eye, then don’t worry - the magick of Santa Muerte comes from your relationship with death and the intent in your heart, and as a last resort you can speak or pray into existence an altar of declared intent as I described in the previous chapter. The physical altar is a sign of respect which is nice to have, but not required - like the wedding ring described earlier. Only you will know in your own heart whether you are limited by your circumstances or limited by your laziness. If limited by your circumstances, then you have no choice but to roll with the punches. If limited by your laziness, then do not expect anything more than lazy results.
So far we have discussed how the power of Santa Muerte magick comes from our relationship with the folk saint, and that the common denominator of all magick systems is intent. For devotees of Santa Muerte, this means that the more clearly we can express our intent to Santa Muerte, the more likely we will be to have her deliver on our petitions. With the petitions I share on my website, this is accomplished through the use of overlapping symbol representations - herbs that symbolize an intent, oils that symbolize the same intent, colored candles that symbolize the same intent, et cetera. Since this is a book for people who don’t have access to the physical tools of magick, the trick is finding a way to express intent in as simple and strong a way as possible, without the physical tools.
