The Santa Muerte Altar
This book is not a book for beginners. It is intended for people who already have an understanding regarding the basics of who Santa Muerte is, and how a magickal relationship with her can be formed. For this reason, I will not be discussing the foundations of Santa Muerte magick. For a detailed discussion on the foundations of Santa Muerte magick, check out my second book, “Santa Muerte Devotion 101: Questions and Answers for Curious Readers and New Devotees,” which is also available on Amazon.com.
This being said, there is one basic aspect of Santa Muerte magick that I will discuss, and that is the concept of the Santa Muerte altar. I discuss this topic here simply because the Santa Muerte altar is mentioned within the petition rituals that follow, and I want the information in this book to stand on its own so that anyone, with any level of experience with Santa Muerte, can make use of the information which I share in the pages that follow.
An altar to Santa Muerte is a way to acknowledge Santa Muerte, and to show the Santa Muerte that you seek a relationship with her. As such, a Santa Muerte altar is a place of power where magick can be raised and petitions can be made. To create a Santa Muerte altar, all you need is a depiction of Santa Muerte. Exactly how you choose to depict Santa Muerte is entirely up to you.
One way to establish a Santa Muerte altar is with a statue or figurine of Santa Muerte. Another popular option is a picture of Santa Muerte printed on regular paper. You could even save a digital image to your cell phone or tablet, and then lean the device against a wall to create a working altar.
Remember that Santa Muerte is death itself, so the depiction of Santa Muerte which you choose as the foundation of your altar does not necessarily have to be a traditional depiction of a skeleton in a cloak holding a scythe. Any depiction or symbol of death can serve as the foundation for an altar to Santa Muerte. One popular depiction of death is “La Catrina”, which is the image of a skeleton in a fancy dress. A replica human skull could also be used as the foundation for an altar, as could an animal skull, because skulls of any variety are symbols of death. Even a simple outline of a skull, drawn by your own hand on a piece of paper, could serve as the foundation for an altar to Santa Muerte. It does not matter how you choose to depict death upon your altar, only that she is depicted in a form which resonates with you.
Size is not a factor when creating your Santa Muerte altar. The depiction of death you choose to serve as the foundation of your altar can be as small as you like or as large as you can afford. The altar also does not need to be permanent. You can erect an altar to Santa Muerte for the purpose of making a petition, and then take the altar down when the petition is done.
Sometimes you may not be able to erect a physical altar - don’t worry. Remember that any depiction of Santa Muerte can serve as the foundation for an altar, and a depiction which you can hold in your mind’s eye can be as powerful as any other. When you are unable to erect a physical altar to Santa Muerte, simply visualize the Santa Muerte, or visualize symbols associated with death, in your mind’s eye, and let this serve as your own personal astral altar for the purposes of the petitions included in this short book.
Part of what makes working with Santa Muerte so appealing is how accepting she is, because Santa Muerte accepts us all. If you absolutely cannot erect a physical altar, and if visualization is not easy for you, then you may perform the petitions included here by simply intending that the petitions be made to Santa Muerte. For example, you can say something simple, like “Santa Muerte, I offer this petition for you,” at the beginning of the petition, then complete the petition as normal. Personally, I think this method should be the method of last resort, not first resort. Part of the power of magick comes from the effort you put into it, so an effort should be made to erect a physical altar, or visualize an astral altar, before making a petition through intent alone.
