In the years I have been running this website, one of the most common messages I get comes from people who tell me they cannot build a "proper" altar to Santa Muerte because they must hide their devotion for fear of persecution. In this post I will discuss the idea of the covert altar for Santa Muerte devotees, an idea that I touch on in my book, "Santa Muerte Devotion 101".
Not all Santa Muerte followers have the luxury of being able to erect a permanent altar for our most Holy Saint Death, but that doesn't mean we can't work with the Santa Muerte and make offerings to her. With the help of a temporary or travel sized altar, we can work with the Santa Muerte just as effectively as anyone who constructs a permanent altar. As with a permanent altar, the most important ingredient for building a temporary or travel sized altar is an image of the Santa Muerte.
![]() An altar can be any flat surface upon which religious or spiritual offerings can be made. It is generally considered the point of focus for religious or spiritual ceremonies, and many religions in the world use altars as a basic cornerstone of belief. In Santa Muerte magick, altars can be public or private, large or small, permanent or temporary. Erecting a permanent altar to the Santa Muerte in your home or place of business is the most direct way to invite the Santa Muerte to take an active role in your life, to petition the Santa Muerte, and to thank the Santa Muerte for wishes or miracles granted. |
