How to Pray the Santa Muerte Rosary

Handmade Santa Muerte rosary by artist Chuck K (on Instagram @CommunionOfSai)
This version of the Santa Muerte rosary can be used to honor the Santa Muerte, to clear the mind and spirit before conducting spell work with the Santa Muerte, and as a form of thanks to the Santa Muerte for miracles or requests granted. The Santa Muerte rosary is a string of 59 beads, each bead representing a prayer or set of prayers. In addition to the beads, the Santa Muerte rosary will also typically display the image of the Santa Muerte with a hanging medallion or amulet.

In Santa Muerte magick, a rosary is a set of prayers used as a form of devotion or offering to the Santa Muerte. Because of the number of prayers involved, devotees will often use a rosary necklace to keep track of their place throughout the recitation of the rosary.

If using a necklace, simply start at the medallion and move up the necklace one bead at time, reciting the appropriate prayer or set of prayers that correspond to each point on the rosary. Go up one side of the necklace and down the other until all beads have been covered. The last point on the rosary necklace, the place that marks the recitation of the last prayer at the bottom of this page (the Santa Muerte rosary "Closing Prayer") is the three way connector - the point on the rosary where the three ends of the rosary connect. The three way connector may or may not be marked by a bead, but if it is, then it is skipped at the beginning of the rosary and only counted at the very end of the rosary.

To begin, hold the medallion or amulet depicting the image of the Santa Muerte in your hands and pray the following Santa Muerte Rosary "Opening Prayer":

Santa Muerte, Holy Death, I offer these prayers for you.
From the altar in my heart, to your ears,
may you find the words sweet, and their meanings true.
Santa Muerte, Holy Death, I offer these prayers for you.

On the first bead, pray one "Our Santa Muerte":

Our Santa Muerte who will come for us all,
kind and gentle be your kiss.
When you come to end my life,
may I be free of any regrets.
Thank you for this day, one more beautiful day,
so I may have it to live, love, and laugh my own way,
amen.

On beads 2-4, pray one "Glory Be Holy Death", each:

Glory be Holy Death, blessed death, peaceful death.
As you have been with me from the beginning,
so are you with me now, and so will you be with me always,
amen.

On bead 5, pray the First Mystery of Santa Muerte:

Holy Death holds in her hand
A magick scythe she commands
When at us her scythe does swing,
swift to us, our death she brings.

Our Santa Muerte who will come for us all,
kind and gentle be your kiss.
When you come to end my life,
may I be free of any regrets.
Thank you for this day, one more beautiful day,
so I may have it to live, love, and laugh my own way,
amen.

Hail the Santisima, full of love and grace.
Blessed by you are the forsaken and forgotten.
Blessed by you are the abused and downtrodden.
Hail the Santisima, who holds power over all,
bless us with your love now and at the moment of our deaths,
amen.

Glory be Holy Death, blessed death, peaceful death.
As you have been with me from the beginning,
so are you with me now, and so will you be with me always,
amen.

On bead 6 - 15, pray one "Hail the Santisima" each:

Hail the Santisima, full of love and grace.
Blessed by you are the forsaken and forgotten.
Blessed by you are the abused and downtrodden.
Hail the Santisima, who holds power over all,
bless us with your love now and at the moment of our deaths,
amen.

On bead 16, pray the Second Mystery:

On the back of Death is placed,
hooded cloak of magick great.
With this power Death protects,
Each of us from birth to death.

As you have been with me from the beginning,
so are you with me now, and so will you be with me always,
amen.

On bead 17 - 26, pray one "Hail the Santisima" each:

Hail the Santisima, full of love and grace.
Blessed by you are the forsaken and forgotten.
Blessed by you are the abused and downtrodden.
Hail the Santisima, who holds power over all,
bless us with your love now and at the moment of our deaths,
amen.

On bead 27, pray the Third Mystery:

Balanced in Death's hand of bone,
Scales of Justice, to all shown.
Special treatment, none receive,
From this Earth, we all must leave.

As you have been with me from the beginning,
so are you with me now, and so will you be with me always,
amen.

On bead 28 - 37, pray one "Hail the Santisima" each:

Hail the Santisima, full of love and grace.
Blessed by you are the forsaken and forgotten.
Blessed by you are the abused and downtrodden.
Hail the Santisima, who holds power over all,
bless us with your love now and at the moment of our deaths,
amen.

On bead 38, pray the Fourth Mystery:

Santa Muerte walks the Earth,
Those who love her, she will serve.
Fear not Death, be unafraid,
Death is with us, everyday.

As you have been with me from the beginning,
so are you with me now, and so will you be with me always,
amen.

On bead 39 - 48, pray one Hail the Santisima each:

Hail the Santisima, full of love and grace.
Blessed by you are the forsaken and forgotten.
Blessed by you are the abused and downtrodden.
Hail the Santisima, who holds power over all,
bless us with your love now and at the moment of our deaths,
amen.

On bead 49, pray the Fifth Mystery:

Land of living, land of dead,
At the bridge between stands Death.
When the flame of life is lost,
Santa Muerte helps us cross.

As you have been with me from the beginning,
so are you with me now, and so will you be with me always,
amen.

On bead 50 - 59, pray one "Hail the Santisima" each:

Hail the Santisima, full of love and grace.
Blessed by you are the forsaken and forgotten.
Blessed by you are the abused and downtrodden.
Hail the Santisima, who holds power over all,
bless us with your love now and at the moment of our deaths,
amen.

Hold the three way connector in your hands and pray the following Santa Muerte Rosary "Closing Prayer":

Hail to you Santa Muerte,
When to you I turn in desperation,
May you shine mercy upon me.

Hail to you Santa Muerte,
When to you I bring petition,
May you shine favor upon me.

Use your powers on my behalf,
and never forsake me,
Santisima Muerte,
amen

End.

Beautiful Rosary prayer! i was wondering if i could use parts of this as a smaller prayer to the santisima muerte. I think it should be okay i just dont want to be disrespectful to her in any way

Use whatever you need. If it helps you build a closer relationship with the Santa Muerte, then I'm glad I could be of help. A rosary, after all, is not one giant prayer, it's a collection of small prayers put together. Look at the Catholic rosary. The Our Father prayer is a part of the Catholic rosary, but many devout Catholics recite the Our Father daily without reciting the rest of the Catholic rosary. This is considered normal to many people and not considered disrespectful at all. Besides, I would imagine that a force as powerful and immortal as death itself would be offended by any honest devotional effort made from a place of love.

I just made my rosary for the first time tonight. I felt like I needed something to bring me joy after my mother's death last year. She was a Pagan and bought me this Rosary a few years ago when she started praying to Santa Muerte herself. I'm not looking for anything from Santa Muerte, just something to help bring me comfort and joy at this time. Thank you for providing information to get me started on my Journey.

I love this Rosary! It brings me much comfort when I recite it! I'm learning to pray. I'm a Witch, not Wiccan who was called by Santisima Muerte last year. I like this Rossary better than others I've read. I think it makes Her happy. We truly connect. Thank you!

This rosary brought me such a sense of peace as I did it just now (actually teared up) Santa Muerte found me several months ago. I am pagan and very much a outsider, but reciting this gave me a feel of acceptance. :)

Hi!!!
First, I wanna say that both the rosary and the prayers are beautiful!
Second, I have a question. Would it be appropriate to pray with a santa muerte rosary to another saint? Apart from our Lady of Death, I feel very drawn to saint Cyprian of Antioch and I was thinking of having a special rosary dedicated to those two saints. Since they are basicaly some of the VERY few saints I feel connected to (if not the only ones). Sorry for the long question!!!!!

Thanks for your kind words! The rosary is just something that helps us keep our place when reciting all those prayers. the power of Santa Muerte does not come from the rosary, but from your relationship with her. If you want to use the beads to keep your place while reciting another set of prayers, and if you feel comfortable sharing rosaries, then I don't see how this might cause a problem.

The power of your relationship with Santa Muerte comes from the heart, not any physical item. You do not need a rosary to pray to Santa Muerte.

Thank you and Blessings! Your words rang true. I did buy a Santa Muerte Rosary however since it is just to keep our place in prayer, I have placed it on Her altar and She seems to want to keep it there. I have learned this version of the rosary and I prefer it! It is SO personal. I have even used just one of these prayers in times when I MOST need Her help at the very moment and She has shown me favor in the situation. It truly IS the power of the relationship of the heart. Thank you AGAIN.
One question what are your thoughts about protection amulets such as the tetragammaton?

@Regina - I'm glad this rosary has brought comfort and power to your relationship with Santa Muerte. As for your question about protection amulets, I think magick and spirituality are deeply personal things - if you find power in the tetragrammaton or other protection amulets like it, then you should feel free to incorporate them into your spiritual practice. The Santa Muerte will accept you either way.

Santa Muerte is death itself. She has existed from the beginning and will persist eternal. Personally, I don't think a force as powerful as Santa Muerte needs to be petty, so I would not worry too much about dissing her. Nobody can tell you how to have a relationship with Santa Muerte, just like nobody can tell you how to have a relationship with your mamma. Build your relationship with Santa Muerte from your own heart and you will be just fine.

I don't think anything would happen. The Santa Muerte loses no power just because someone messes with a rosary. The rosary is a tool for building your relationship with Santa Muerte, it is not the source of your relationship. Maybe just ask your brother to have more respect for your things.

Actually, the beads don't matter! They are not a source of power, just a tool to help you keep track of your place in the rosary. Any common beads will work, and some rosaries don't even use beads, just knots in a piece of cord. You can do a Google search for "how to make a rosary" for instructions on how to make a variety of different rosaries. Most instructions will include a list of tools you need, which you can then find on Amazon, or at a craft store like Michaels

I have an altar for the Virgin Mary and archangel Michael by her side. I pray the catholic rosary. I recently had a reading and the Santa Muerte has a message for me. I feel like I should get to know her. Would it be disrespectful to have both An altar for the virgin Mary and one for her in the same room? Also what kind of offerings does she like. And last question can I use a catholic rosary to pray to her?

Reply
Arnold link
11/14/2020 06:19:27 pm

I do not think it would be disrespectful to have an altar to both in the same room. Remember that Santa Muerte accepts us all, which means she would also accept someone who comes to her through Catholicism, including those who keep altars to the Virgin Mary. Personally, I do not think an energy as powerful as Santa Muerte needs to engage in petty human behavior like jealousy. The fact is she has already won, because you move closer to her with each and every breath that you take. The Santa Muerte loses absolutely nothing when you allow her altar to share space with another altar.

What you offer is up to you. I recommend that you give offerings which you yourself would like to receive. With offerings to Santa Muerte, is really is the thought that counts. Giving the Santa Muerte something that you yourself could just as easily keep and enjoy says a whole lot more than giving her something just because you want to get rid of it, or because you have nowhere else to put it. Check out this blog post regarding making and managing offerings to Santa Muerte: https://www.santamuertemagick.com/blog/how-to-make-and-manage-offerings-to-the-santa-muerte

As for the rosary you use to pray to Santa Muerte, you are free to use whatever rosary you like. A physical rosary is nothing more than a tool to keep track of your place as you recite the rosary prayers. It is not the object you hold in your hands, but the intent you hold in your heart. A simple cord with knots would serve the same purpose.

I know it’s bad practice to wear a rosary around the neck but do you think that applies with a Santa Muerte rosary? I’d like to keep her with me and I really want to wear one of mine because I just feel like I should, but also would like to be careful not to offend!

Reply

I personally do not think it is bad practice to wear a rosary. A rosary, after all, is not the source of magick power, rather it is a symbol for our devotion - just like a wedding ring is a symbol for a marriage, not the source of love within a marriage. Whether or not you wear a rosary, whether or not a rosary is destroyed, it does not take anything away from the power of Santa Muerte, nor does it take anything away from the relationship you have with Santa Muerte. Remember that every relationship with Santa Muerte is unique, so if you feel pulled to wear your rosary, then I encourage you to wear it without worry. Walking around in downtown Tijuana, Mexico, I can tell you I have seen several people wearing Santa Muerte rosaries, necklaces, and pendants, so you would not be alone.

The beads on a rosary are a tool to keep track of your place while reciting the rosary prayer. Beads are not required to place a pendant on a chain or cord. I have a consecration petition you can perform if you would like to dedicate your pendant as a magick tool in the name of Santa Muerte: https://www.santamuertemagick.com/blog/consecration-santa-muerte-magick

I have a question, when I first got into having a relationship with Mi Santa I had made her an altar especially for her. It held a glass of water a small Santa Muerte gold pendant and a top of a far that contained some stones, chocolate n lottery ticket wich was signed by myself and also lots of change older/newer ones.Well couple of weeks after that I was arrested and my family was evicted unfortunately but I still never lost my faith in Mi Santa but I feel she's upset with me cause once I got out I had asked where my belongings were placed and I could not get a straight answer I believe that either they left it,damaged or destroyed it maybe even through it away.is there a way to make it up to her even though I was not the one who got rid of it?

The power you receive from Santa Muerte does not come from any physical item, but from your relationship with her. You do not need anything special to pray to the Santa Muerte, and to make her a pert of your life. There is nothing you need to make up for, because Santa Muerte, as death itself, lost literally nothing when your personal property was damaged / destroyed. She is just as strong as ever, and just as powerful as ever. If you want to show Santa Muerte that you are still devoted, then begin by reciting a simple prayer to tell her as much.

When reciting the rosary .Do we have to say it 9 times each mystery ..it says each I'm wondering I really don't wanna recite the rosary wrong

There are five mysteries - Bead #5, Bead #16, Bead #27, Bead #38, and Bead #49.

The set of prayers that is listed under each mystery (using the instructions above) is recited once.

Notice when I use the word "each", I am referring to a set of beads. For example, when I say:

"On beads 2-4, pray one 'Glory Be Holy Death', EACH"

This means you recite the "Glory be..." prayer a total of 3 times - once for Bead #2, once for Bead #3, and once for Bead #4.

If this is still confusing, try following along with the video that is embedded above. When you hear me clap, that is your cue to move to the next bead. I recite the whole rosary from beginning to end.

Greetings!

Firstly, thank you! Absolutely love your site. Will devoutly have to check out the Patreon. Also, thank you for such a beautiful and intriguingly catchy rosary. I have a question in regards to initiating. From what I’ve studied so far on Santa Muerte, there’s not really an initiation process. I’m sort of new and feel like someone was trying to throw me off by asking me if I had been initiated. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much for the kind words - I am happy to know that my prayers seem to resonate with so many people.

As for your question, you are correct, there is generally no recognized form of initiation ritual. One of the reasons why Santa Muerte has grown so popular in the last couple of decades is because people from all walks of life were having (and continue to have) success petitioning her for miracles. Many of these people approach Santa Muerte in desperation, with little time for study or elaborate initiations.

Personally, I view Santa Muerte as death itself, and if death comes for us all, then we are all already accepted by Santa Muerte. It is by virtue of our mortality - the fact that we are alive and will one day die - that we are granted access to the power of, and access to a relationship with, Santa Muerte. When people ask me about initiations, I like to say that we were initiated into the power of Santa Muerte the moment we were born, because that was the very same moment that we began to die, and when we started our lifelong journey into the waiting arms of Santa Muerte's final embrace.

Also, I view the idea of ritualistic initiation as something from organized religion, which I do not practice. Santa Muerte magick is a system, and Santa Muerte devotion is a way of life / philosophy for living - in my opinion. No religion required.

All this being said - if the Santa Muerte accepts us all, then she must also accept those of us who choose to recognize an initiation, or who come from spiritual paths which place an emphasis on initiation. While I do not view initiation rituals as necessary for successful Santa Muerte devotion / magick, I understand that magick and spirituality are deeply personal things. For this reason, I say that if performing a Santa Muerte initiation ritual would make you feel complete in your practice of devotion or magick, then by all means, perform the initiation.

Finally - I was asked in the past to create an initiation type ritual. I decided to compromise and write a dedication ritual. While I still think the idea of a dedication is religious in nature, this specific ritual maintains one's independence and requires no other person's approval, nor submission to any other person's ideas. It is a personal way to mark a beginning of a spiritual journey, but again, it should not be considered a requirement. There are many ways to mark the beginning of a spiritual journey - make an offering, create an altar, say a prayer, buy a book, get a tattoo - this ritual is just one option of many.

You can find the dedication ritual at: https://www.santamuertemagick.com/blog/santa-muerte-dedication-ritual

Thank you for writing. Unfortunately, I do not have a version of this rosary in Spanish. Spanish is my second language, and I am not yet confident I could write in Spanish completely error free.

Hi, I’m new here and I want to know more about Santa Muerte. I feel like there is a connection with me and her but I just don’t know where to start. No one in my family is a devotee of her so finding a starting place is difficult. Do you need to have an altar for her in order to communicate? Or is it just all what comes from your heart and your energy? Also love your prayers!

You do not need an altar to communicate with Santa Muerte. Simple prayer spoken from your heart is all you need. Remember that Santa Muerte has been with you since the day you were born, because that was the day that you started the process of dying. For this reason, it might be better to say not that you are starting a relationship, but that you are now ready to acknowledge a relationship which has always existed.

First of all I must say thank you for providing this site and great information.
I've been following Santisima for a couple of years now, slowly finding my feet with Her. She has been a constant source of blessings to me and my partner.
( Thank you so much Flaquita )
I try to keep my prayers/ devotions regular but circumstances have caused a little neglect at times, certainly not intentional.
I prayed the Rosary for the first time today and felt very blessed and very emotional with it too. I could feel tears coming to my eyes.
Thank you again so much Santisima for your continuous blessings 🙏

I came upon this website strictly thru the rabbit hole. I absolutely love the rosary by Chuck K. How can I go about purchasing one for myself to assist me through my journey.

I await your reply.

Thank you for all your hard work and helping us along our journey.

Unfortunately, Chuck's Instagram account (@CommunionOfSai) has not been active for over a year, and his related Etsy page is no longer actively selling. All I can think of is to try sending him a direct message on Instagram.

If you can't get a hold of him, consider making a purchase through the "Rosaries" link under the "Shop" tab on this site: https://www.santamuertemagick.com/rosaries.html

Glad you like the site!

Hi Arnold, Where can I find the 5 Mysteries of Santa Muerte that you originally had posted in the rosary? They meant the world to me and I really miss them when I say this wonderful rosary for The Bony Lady.
Thanks, Artemisia

The original brought me and mama close. I committed to memory best I could. I hope this helps!

1. The Santa Muerte receives her scythe which she uses to cut the threads of life

2. The Santa Muerte receives her cloak which she uses to protect the world and her devotees.

3. The Santa Muerte receives the scale of justice which she uses to bring peace, balance and tranquility unto the world.

4. The Santa Muerte places both her feet upon the world so that she may serve all who love her.

5. The Santa Muerte is given the power to walk beyond the world and back to collect the soul when the flame of life has extinguished.

In the tradition of Santa Muerte, there is no need to wait for a specific day to dedicate a rosary. Santa Muerte, as death itself, does not take days off, and Death is active in the world all day, everyday, all year long. If there is a day that is special to you, or a day that is special in your personal spiritual practice, then you can perform a rosary dedication on that day, if you wish.

From the perspective of Santa Muerte devotion, of course. The rosary is just a tool for keeping track of the prayers. If Santa Muerte accepts us all, she must also accept those of us who pray her rosary while holding Catholic beads.

As for making the substitution, the Catholic rosary should have just as many beads as the Santa Muerte rosary - 59.

But I think I know what might be going on. Look at the Santa Muerte rosary diagram that you can find here (it's a picture of a blue Santa Muerte rosary with a bunch of numbers on it):

https://www.santamuertemagick.com/blog/how-to-pray-the-santa-muerte-rosary

On the diagram, there is a point that says "3 Way Connector". As you can see in the diagram, there is no bead at that connection point. Now look at your Catholic rosary. Is there a bead at that same point? If so, then that would be the reason for the "extra" bead, and you can just treat that bead as the "3 Way Connector".

If that is not right and you have an extra bead in a different spot, then let me know where that extra bead is showing up.

Hope that helps.

Hi !! Ive been pulling towards getting a necklace or rosary of la muerte but I dont have an altar for her. Ive read a few comments about how you don’t specifically need an altar to recognize or have a relationship with her. I was wondering if I needed an altar in order to even get a necklace or rosary?

No, you do not need an altar to get a necklace or rosary. In fact, you do not need anything physical to build your relationship to Santa Muerte. Your relationship with Santa Muerte comes from the heart, and the foundation of that relationship comes from the fact that you will one day die. It is your own mortality that gives you access to the power of Santa Muerte - nothing else.

As for the necklace / rosary - I personally view these tools as miniature altars in and of themselves. If all you need to build a Santa Muerte altar is a depiction of Santa Muerte, or a depiction of something that represents death, then the imagery of a Santa Muerte necklace or Santa Muerte rosary meets that requirement. A prayer prayed over a Santa Muerte rosary is just as powerful as a prayer prayed at a physical Santa Muerte altar.
