La Torre / The Tower

Depiction: 

In the Tarot de la Santa Muerte, the card "La Torre" shows a large, black cloaked Santa Muerte standing tall beside a tower made of brick. The Santa Muerte swings a scythe through the center of the tower, ripping it in half and sending bricks and debris into the air. From the top of the tower bellows fire and black smoke. 

The land on which the scene takes place is shown as dirt, and buried beneath the surface of the dirt are three items - a skull, a sword, and a crown. The background of this scene is marked by a glowing sun placed directly behind the head of the Santa Muerte, along with orange, red, and white clouds.

Symbolism: 

La Torre represents liberation, escape, and an end to struggles. The Santa Muerte in this depiction is wearing a black cloak, which represents protection from direct attacks, including spiritual attacks and black magick. The scythe she swings, which she uses to cut the strings of life, is here a symbol for Santa Muerte's ability to bring an end to obstacles. The collapsing brick tower which she destroys, itself a prison, represents the destruction of the troubles and obstacles currently holding you captive. The fire and black smoke bellowing from the top of the tower represent not just a break from the obstacles, but the complete destruction of them.

Dirt is often associated with worries and blockages. Here, the dirt beneath the tower hides three symbols, a skull, a sword, and a crown. The skull is often used to represent the self - especially self reflection, introspection, and self acceptance. The sword is often considered a symbol of power and bravery. Lastly, the crown represents material wealth and success. Although these three symbols are hidden beneath the dirt in this image, the removal of obstacles represented by the destruction of the tower will allow these treasures to be found. In other words, through the destruction of the obstacles pinning you down, you will find yourself, you will find your power, and you will find your success.

The glowing sun behind the Santa Muerte represents life itself, but the fact that the sun shines behind the Santa Muerte reminds us that even the brightest suns will eventually set. Here, the sun reminds us that just as the brightest suns must set, so too will the sun set on the things that trouble us and the obstacles that stand in our way.

Finally, the white clouds in the background of this image represent hope for the future, while the red and orange clouds represent the heat, intensity, and high emotions that often accompany troubles and obstacles in life.

In a Reading Upright:

La Torre represents an escape from negativity, liberation from obstacles, and an end to a period of trouble in your life. When these obstacles and troubles are out of the way, you will find self acceptance, power, and success.

In a Reading Reversed:

La Torre represents negative consequences, accidents, and broken plans. If you are trying to build something or if you are working on a project, expect to feel as if things are falling apart. This card in reverse may also represent anxiety about your circumstances, and feeling as if you are hopelessly stuck in a position you can't escape.
