Los Enamorados / The Lovers

Depiction: 

In the Tarot de la Santa Muerte, "Los Enamorados" depicts a pair of naked lovers, staring deep into eachother's eyes. They stand as a pair in front of the red cloaked Santa Muerte, on fertile ground beneath a shining sun and flocks of birds. A winged heart floats above Santa Muerte.

Symbolism: 

Los Enamorados generally represent a happy union. The two lovers staring deep into eachother's eyes are symbols of that happy union, as is the winged heart above the Santa Muerte. The fertile land and shining sun are symbols of fertility and growth - which mean that from the happy union, many good things will flourish. The birds in the image represent the element of air which stands for knowledge, wisdom, and learning - which are all important ingredients for a successful partnership / relationship. The birds also represent something else - birds have long been symbols for communication, and these birds represent the need for communication to keep a relationship strong. Notice that five birds appear to fly over the side of the man, and another five birds appear to fly over the side of the woman. This represents a balance in the relationship; a balance of knowledge and wisdom as well as a balance of communication. In a balanced relationship, both parties feel heard and both parties feel like equals.

Los Enamorados is a card that represents a happy union or partnership. It may represent a romantic union, a short union of sex and lust, or a completely nonphysical type of union or partnership as in business or platonic relationships.

In a Reading Upright:

This card signifies a balanced and happy relationship. If you are thinking of becoming romantically involved, entering a new business partnership, opening up your place to a roommate, meeting your girlfriend's parents for the first time, or what have you - know that the Santa Muerte looks down on the union and smiles upon it. Good things will come from the union or partnership, as acknowledged by the fertile ground, shining sun, and balance of birds in the image.

In a Reading Reversed:

Los Enamorados represent a relationship in turmoil - a relationship of unbalance. There is a lack of communication in a relationship, or a potential relationship is likely to turn sour, if things continue as they are. When this card is in reverse, the birds that once flew in the sky now lay dead on the ground - there is no communication, things are not being said and it's turning the parties on their heads. The root of the turmoil must be addressed - it must be communicated - for there to be any hope of salvaging the relationship.
