Primary Use:

For giving thanks to the Santa Muerte for blessings and favor given, and for continued blessings and favor in the future.

You Will Need -

Herbs:
​

• Rose - for Santa Muerte devotees in Mexico, the personification of death is viewed as a woman, and one of her favorite offerings to receive is flowers, especially roses. They represent the softer, loving, and merciful side of the Santa Muerte.

 

• ​Tobacco - although soft enough to appreciate the gift of roses, Santa Muerte is also known for her many vices, which is why devotees often offer Santa Muerte cigars, booze, and candy. Here, the tobacco represents Santa Muerte's vices, her approachable down-to-Earth spirit, her "live for the moment" attitude, and her ability to connect with us in the physical realm.​

 

• ​Copal - known as a powerful spiritual protector and purifier, copal has a long history in Mexico for its connection to the dead and it's considered one of the Santa Muerte's favorite incense aromas. Used here to represent the spiritual, magickal, and mystical nature of Santa Muerte.

Other Items:
​

• ​Mortar and Pestle - for grinding your herbal ingredients into a powder.

 

• ​1 Piece of Paper - to hold the name and date of birth of the person for whom the petition is being made - the person who has been blessed and who wishes to give thanks.

 

• 1 Black Ink Pen - for the paper.

 

• ​1 White Candle - to appeal to the energy of the White Cloaked Santa Muerte of harmony, happiness, peace, and general protection.

Crafting Your Petition -

The first thing you'll want to do is set your copal in the freezer. Copal is a resin and will gum up if you try to grind it in your mortar and pestle at room temperature. This just makes it easier to work with.

While your copal freezes, go to your Santa Muerte altar and write on your piece of paper the name and date of birth of the person for whom this petition is being made - the person who wishes to show thanks and encourage continued blessings. Place your offering candle over this piece of paper and light your offering candle at your altar.

Next, grind approximately equal amounts of rose and tobacco with your mortar and pestle. As you grind these ingredients, recite the Thanks and Blessings Santa Muerte Magick prayer, found below. You can also focus on your intent of showing thanks to Santa Muerte for blessings given, and on receiving continued good blessings into the future.

When your rose and tobacco have been ground to a satisfactory level, you can retrieve your copal from the freezer to grind an approximately equal amount into the herbal mixture. Continue to focus on how thankful you are to Santa Muerte for her blessings as you recite the below magick prayer and incorporate your copal into the herbal mixture.

When you have reduced to a powder approximately equal amounts of the rose, tobacco, and copal, slowly sprinkle your powder mixture around the base of your burning offering candle. This should create a ring of powder around your offering candle and on top of your piece of paper, with the idea being that we surround the person whose name is on the paper with the magickal energy of the herbs and the white offering candle. You may continue to recite the below magick prayer as you distribute the powder around the candle.

After sprinkling your herbal mixture around the base of your offering candle, all that's left to do is allow the offering candle to burn to completion. Over the next day or two while your candle burns, you can visit your altar and recite the Thanks and Blessings Santa Muerte Magick Prayer (found below) to reinforce the intent behind the petition.

Completing the Petition

Once your offering candle has burned all the way to completion, the petition is complete. You may dispose of what remains from this petition using the instructions outlined in my post "How to Dispose of Magick Trash".
